4. Don’t Blindly Trust Referral Agencies Many placement agencies are paid commissions by the communities they recommend. Always do your own homework to include Google reviews, state inspection reports, and call the local ombudsman.

5. Get the Real Staff-to-Resident Ratio Ask for day, evening, night, and weekend numbers and what happens when someone calls in sick. Do they use reliable agency staff or just “make do” with whoever is left?

6. Use the Pre-Admission Assessment to Your Advantage Before signing anything, a nurse will evaluate your loved one. This is your golden opportunity to confirm they truly can (and will) meet all current and future needs. Bring a detailed list!

7. Ask the Tough Money Question Up Front “What happens if my loved one eventually runs out of private funds?” Do they accept Medicaid? Will they keep your loved one if they convert, or force a move when money runs low? Get it in writing.

8. Request a Trial Stay (Respite) The best way to know? Have your loved one actually live there for 3–14 days. Eat the food, join the activities, experience the nighttime staffing. You’ll learn more in a weekend than in ten tours.
