How Our Vision Began

Who takes care of the people who spent their lives taking care of others?

That question helped inspire the Kowalian Foundation's vision for a different kind of senior living community.

We began by thinking about caregivers.

These are the people who spend their working lives caring for others. They help people bathe, dress, eat, move safely, and maintain their dignity. They offer companionship, encouragement, and comfort, often during some of life's most difficult moments.

Yet many of these dedicated caregivers earn modest wages throughout their careers.

When their own retirement years arrive, the cost of quality senior living may be beyond their financial reach.

We believed they deserved better.

Then something happened that expanded our thinking.

We began receiving calls from senior living facilities throughout Arizona. They were looking for help finding new homes for residents who were running out of money.

Imagine spending years in a place you call home, building friendships, becoming familiar with the people around you, and then facing the possibility of having to leave because your financial resources are running out.

These weren't simply housing problems. They were human situations involving people, relationships, dignity, and the need for stability.

Those conversations changed the scope of our vision.

We realized this wasn't only about retired caregivers.

It was about older adults from every walk of life.

We began with a concern for the people who care for others. That concern grew into a vision for a community where everyone matters.

Education, Resources, and Community Support

While our long-term vision includes developing a residential community, the Kowalian Foundation's mission extends beyond buildings and housing.

We believe access to helpful information, guidance, and community support should not depend on someone's financial circumstances.

Our mission focuses on four important areas:

• Senior and Caregiver Education: Helping older adults and caregivers understand important life decisions, available resources, and changing needs.

• Family Preparedness: Encouraging families to organize important information, communicate their wishes, and prepare for life's transitions.

• Community Connections: Connecting Arizona families with educational opportunities, organizations, and resources that support their well-being.

• Charitable Assistance: Working toward greater access to essential guidance and resources for individuals and families facing financial challenges.

We believe that helping people understand their options is often the first step toward making better decisions.

Our Long-Term Vision: A Life Plan Community Where Everyone Belongs

Because dignity, compassionate care, and a sense of belonging should not depend on wealth.

One of the Kowalian Foundation's long-term goals is to develop a nonprofit-owned Life Plan Community in Arizona.

We envision a thoughtfully designed residential community offering independent living, assisted living, memory care, and access to additional healthcare services as residents' needs change.

But our vision goes beyond providing different levels of care.

We want to create a community where a retired caregiver, a former teacher, a business owner, and someone who has enjoyed considerable financial success can all belong.

Different backgrounds. Different financial circumstances. Equal dignity and respect.

Wealth should not determine a person's worth, the dignity they receive, or whether they belong.

Our vision is built around four guiding principles:

• Continuity of Care: Helping residents remain connected to their community as their healthcare and personal needs change.

• Nonprofit Ownership: Building a financially sustainable community where resources support the organization's charitable mission rather than private shareholders.

• Financial Accessibility: Developing a model that seeks to make quality senior living available to people across a wide range of financial circumstances.

• Equal Dignity: Creating a welcoming environment where every resident is treated with kindness, respect, and compassion, regardless of income or background.

We recognize that turning this vision into reality will require substantial planning, community partnerships, charitable support, and responsible financial management.

This is a long-term development goal, not an existing residential community.

Our hope is to build more than a place to live. We want to build a community where people feel they belong.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

Traditional senior living communities can require significant financial resources, placing them beyond the reach of many older adults.

The Kowalian Foundation wants to explore a different approach.

Our long-term development objectives include:

• Creating residential opportunities for seniors with varying levels of income and financial resources.

• Exploring income-adjusted fees and charitable assistance programs to help make quality care more accessible.

• Establishing a Resident Benevolence Fund designed to assist qualifying residents who experience financial hardship.

• Developing partnerships with healthcare providers, community organizations, charitable supporters, and other resources.

• Building a sustainable operating model that supports both the quality of care and the Foundation's commitment to financial accessibility.

These are goals we intend to pursue as the proposed community is developed. Specific programs, eligibility requirements, and financial arrangements will depend on future planning and available resources.

Our guiding principle will remain the same:

A person's financial circumstances should not determine whether they are worthy of a safe home, compassionate care, and a community that values them.
